Sessions

What to expect during a tutoring session

Tutoring has a much more relaxed atmosphere than in the classroom. I'm hesitant to say it's fun, but many students have truly said it's fun and doesn't feel like math at all. I use a lot silliness or goofiness to help relieve anxiety and make them laugh.

Most sessions last about 60 minutes, for 7th grade and older. In my experience students begin to tire around the 45-50 minute mark. But some students take advantage of longer sessions especially to prepare for tests or final exams.

Sessions can be in-person (if local to Northwest, Ohio), online, or a hybrid of both. Online sessions don't work for all students, but it's an option for those who live far away, fall ill, convenience, or for adverse weather.

My ultimate goal for the student is to become math competent and math independent. So I think to think of tutoring like an extra practice before the game, an extra rehearsal before the concert, or extra study time before the test. I look at tutoring as remediation or rehabilitation. Ultimately I am helping students build skills to be able to manage their math anxiety and to use what they already know to solve newer concepts and problems.

Aside from learning the math, we also work on building math confidence. I want them to know their answer is correct and be sure about it.
